A Promise to Adventure

What happens when a a man who calls the road his home and a woman who just can't see enough of the world meet? They fall in love. Its quite simple really, every date is an exploration (and how vast of an exploration it is into another person); vacation is unheard of because life is one long adventure. However, what happens when these to wanderlust lovers grow up, get married, and decide they want to plan for a future? They find a struggle. I think its a struggle that many people deal with, wanting two very opposite things at the exact same time. My husband and I have found ourselves in this interesting dilemma where "real life" conflicts with daydreams, being a grown up overshadows the child, and responsibility frightens the adventurer away.
It was on the back porch of the cottage we lived in for our first week of marriage that it finally surfaced itself into a conversation. My husband complained about his life having turned from an adventure of traveling state to state taking up jobs to a nine to five work week in a career. I admitted feeling chronically irritated by the lack of time on the road, bored by the routine of being an adult. How do we solve this? Getting married is supposed to be the adventure of all adventures! It is two people experiencing life together, sharing the open road to finally not find it so lonely in its exhilaration! And yet, opportunity knocked on my husbands door and we realized he had to take it, we wanted stability. Sitting there on the back porch with beers in our hands (and only the best craft beer, as my love would have nothing less in the fridge) we discussed and discussed our frustration. Finally, I threw my arms around his shoulders, laid my head on one side and said "If we cant be gypsies anymore, then lets do it part time; weekend gypsies!" And so, we made a pact that evening that we would be grown ups Monday through Friday, but after 4 pm on Friday, every Friday, our hair would be let down and our travel packs ready to go anywhere!
Its been three months, and I admit it isn't easy to make the time to travel, or even get out of town and go for a hike, but we have made a few happen and are completely set on many more. I hope this can become a place to store my findings, adventures, and promote the never ending list of things to be explored...Because no matter what my friends, never let go of the explorer inside yourself.
